Vicki
Ragan has exhibited as an artist photographer in major venues around
the world her work is in the permanent collections of the High Museum, the
Center for Creative Photography, the Brooklyn Museum, the Houston
Museum of Fine Art, and Polaroid Corp.'s International Art Collection.
Among her many bodies of work is the ongoing Recurring Visions series,
a visual diary of her subconscious from 1973 to
the present. The series reflects the concerns and vision that have been
most consistent over her career. She says, "Even as my life and emotions have changed, the same objects and compositions reappear. Garments,
curtains, veils, shadows, eyes, human forms—all these things are
abstract yet familiar enough to work like portals, evoking in viewers
who pass through them their own emotions, thoughts and memories. I
can't specify with any precision what my iconography means to me or
evokes in me other than to say that it functions as a tool that lets me
enter into a world of fantasy and play. I tend not to use faces and
other very specific forms that are too suggestive or loaded with
associations that tie down the viewer's response."
